Hij behaalde zijn doctoraal Biologie (cum laude) aan de Universiteit van Amsterdam in 1986. Van 1986-1991 promoveerde hij op de effecten van spoormetalen op Chironomidenlarven (Universiteit van Amsterdam). In 1991 verdedigde hij zijn proefschrift getiteld ''Trace metal ecotoxicokinetics of chironomids''. Vanaf 1991 is Klaas Timmermans werkzaam als (senior) wetenschapper bij het Koninklijk Nederlands Instituut voor Onderzoek der Zee (NIOZ), eerst binnen de afdeling Mariene Chemie & Geologie, van 2008- 2016 bij de afdeling Biologische Oceanografie (afdelingshoofd 2011-2016), en vanaf 2016 bij de afdeling Estuariene en Deltasystemen, (afdelingshoofd), NIOZ-Yerseke. | |||
Per 1 september 2014 is Klaas Timmermans benoemd tot honorair hoogleraar Mariene Planten Biomassa in de vakgroep Ocean Ecosystems, met in ESRIG, Energy and Sustainability Research Institute Groningen aan de Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (Faculteit Science and Engineering). | |||
Sinds juni 2019 is hij lector Aquacultuur aan de HZ University of Applied Sciences, Vlissingen. | |||
