Summary of the project

Striking on the African savannah is the giraffe stable in the shape of an onion. Sustainable materials and solutions were used in the construction of this animal enclosure. The design incorporates sustainable materials such as untreated wood with an FSC quality mark and grasses such as reed and pressed bamboo. Natural elements such as sun, wind and rain have been used. For example, the roof is transparent and the height of the facades is determined in such a way that the solar heat can be optimally used. This also allows the animals to stand outside in the sun on the north side, even on a beautiful sunny autumn or winter day.

On cold days, the 400m3 enclosure is partially heated instead of the entire room. The giraffes can find the warmth themselves at 'hugging walls'. The wood chip stove, which also heats the Crocodile River, provides the energy for this and uses pruning waste instead of fossil fuels. The rainwater that falls on the roof of the giraffe house is collected and used to water the tropical plants in the adjacent Crocodile River.
